A strong demand for olfactory education and knowledge of perfumes has emerged in the last ten years, especially in countries with a strong perfume culture. However, this interest has accumulated worldwide since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, emphasizes the professional creation and training company in a study conducted within its international network of franchisees. Between the need for knowledge, the quest for well-being, and the boom in ambient perfume, Cinquième Sens talks about the trends of this market.
«The global pandemic has highlighted the problem of anosmia and has led to a greater awareness of the importance of smell. In this context, there is growing interest in perfumery; not only in a deeper understanding of perfume but also in the impact of smell on well-being and psychological balance,» explains Isabelle Ferrand, CEO of Cinquième Sens .
Need for knowledge
This trend had emerged before the pandemic began, but it has been strengthened and accelerated due to the various lockdowns.
«On the one hand, people have become aware of the importance of perfumes and want to occupy their free time and learn different things from home. With the pandemic, many people want to do what they never had the opportunity to do before, realize their dreams, and one of those dreams may be to learn more about perfumery. On the other hand, there are entrepreneurs who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic and who want to start a perfume, soap, or candle business,» he says. Ana María Páez Saldarriaga, director of Atelier Olfativo , Cinquième Sens franchisee in Colombia.
« We are faced with a fascinating mix of individuals and professionals. We have people who never thought they would have access to training in perfumery because of their place of residence (i.e., far from the American perfume centers in New York and California), and who, thanks to Zoom, are realizing their dreams. Others, who were too happy with their work assisting physically in a training session, can now join us for short moments because they work from home and have more flexibility. »", confirms Tami Katz , from the American perfume consulting company Sérendipité.
« Since the pandemic, there are more and more people looking for help to launch a natural perfume brand because they want to change careers and do something they love. », points out Samantha Taylor of The Powder Chamber, in Australia.
« An explosion in the demand for olfaction is taking place »", adds Alessandra Tucci , founder of Paralela Escola Olfativa, in São Paulo, Brazil.
