Why
Cinquième Sens?
A scent often precedes words. It evokes an image, a place, an emotion; it also reveals what we have not yet learned to observe. Learning to sense is refining our attention to the world, discovering a new language, and gradually gaining the freedom to name, compare, and understand. A poorly used or overused sense diminishes; when properly accompanied, it is cultivated. The Cinquième Sens courses begin with this transformation of the gaze.
«The more we smell, the better we can smell,» repeated Monique Schlienger, founder of Cinquième Sens. This conviction carries with it a broader ambition: to give everyone the means to educate their sense of smell and to recognize olfaction as a full-fledged culture. Since 1983, Cinquième Sens has been a benchmark institution in olfactory culture. Generations of professionals have trained there; major fragrance houses, major brands, established professionals, future talents, and leaders in the industry come to learn, improve, and share a common culture of perfume.
The training sessions are delivered by perfumer-creators, evaluators and specialists who practice their profession every day, especially at Cinquième Sens Studio. They not only transmit a program: they share gestures, methods, examples and the questions encountered in the field. You learn from professionals in the field, by feeling, comparing, describing, formulating and re-formulating. This proximity to practice makes the knowledge more concrete, more current and immediately applicable.
Progressing does not consist in accumulating answers, but in building landmarks that become your own. Cinquième Sens has designed pedagogical tools that have become benchmarks in the field. The olfactory pyramid helps to read the construction of a perfume; the Olfactorium®, a miniature and portable perfume organ containing 24 or 48 bottles, allows you to feel, compare and memorize the raw materials, accords or perfumes; the Olfathèque® connects these perceptions with a structured culture. These tools accompany the training and then extend learning in complete autonomy.
Professionals, teams, people in transition or passionate about perfume: everyone arrives with their experience, their rhythm and their project. The cataloged training courses and customized programs allow you to build the most appropriate path, in person or remotely. In Paris, you learn in a place designed to feel and experiment; in Grasse, closer to the historical territory of perfume; internationally, in contact with different cultures and markets. Our teaching team takes the time to listen to your project and guide you towards the right path.
